About Us & FAQ
The Flying Hatter is a woman owned business creating hats out of Durango, Colorado. Our felt and palm straw hat bodies are ethically sourced and made in the United States. We produce small batches of hats that are uniquely made with old hatting techniques. Each team member touches the hats with unique skills from blocking, shaping, painting, and sewing fiber into artistic wearable art. No two hats are alike. Visitors walk away with a custom piece of art, and an heirloom to pass through generations. Made with love from our hands into yours.
Blank Fur Felt are steamed over wooden block forms. The felt opens and is stretched over blocks, then left overnight to dry with a string that "blocks" or breaks the brim from the crown. Once dry, the hat is taken off the block, and a sweatband is sewn into the inside of the hat. The hat is put on steam and the crown of the hat is shaped by hand. Once the perfect shape and style are made for the crown, then that hat goes back to the sewing studio for trim treatment; otherwise, known as a hatband. Combinations of silk, leather, fabric, velvet, lace are artfully cut, assembled, and sewn together for what make The Flying Hatter's hats truly unique and one of a kind.
